Batalay Shrine or also known as The Site of the First Cross in Catanduanes is located in Brgy. Batalay in the town of Bato, Catanduanes.
It is believed to have been constructed over the grave of the shipwrecked Fr. Diego de Herrera of the Augustinian Order in 1576 and well believed that a spring of clear water sprouted near the cross having healing powers. Legend says that natives suffered supernatural punishment after killing Fray Diego de Herrera. It is said the the punishment was in the form of school of swordfish, which attacked and killed many of the natives.
